How to solve errors that arise from installers or running Windows Update in Windows 7

A critical bug revolving around the Customer Experience Improvement Program has been causing beta testers errors whenever an .msi installer is run or when performing a Windows Update. There is an interesting story behind this bug since it was originally fixed by Windows 7 testers themselves that you can read about here.

Above are the official instructions on how to fix the error. The steps are pretty simple and simply involve deleting a registry key.

The difference between this fix and the previous ones from the hackers is that CEIP does not have to be shut down.  If you want a “quick-fix”, I’ve created a .bat file that does everything above for you. Just make sure you right click it and Run as Administrator.

You can download the quick-fix here.

I have tried both fixes (shutting down CEIP and deleting the registry key). This has done nothing. I’m still not able to install anything (well, anything MSI related). I can’t install drivers, I can’t install games, nothing. Honestly, I’ve only been trying games, but that shouldn’t make a difference.

Tonight, I couldn’t even install any windows updates, but restoring to 3/10 seemed to bring back windowsupdate. But I don’t have a restore point taking me far back enough to avoid the bug.

I’m thinking of going back to vista (or maybe XP). Help me, RC1! You’re my only hope.
