Windows 7 Upgrade Coupon Details come to light

We’ve already heard a bit about Best Buy’s Windows 7 Upgrade Plans a week ago. We’ve also been hearing from TechARP for a while now, that June 26th will be the date when Windows 7 Technical Guarantee programs will begin.

Although nothing is official yet, PCWorld is reporting that several PC vendors and sellers will be prepared to launch the upgrade coupon program starting June 26th. The program allows anyone that buys premium versions of Windows Vista to upgrade to Windows 7 when it is released.

Offers are said to vary between retailers, but three Taiwanese PC makers have already said they will be providing a free upgrade coupon to anyone that buys a laptop or desktop loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate, between June 26th and October 22nd. Generally, PC Vendors are looking at a $9 to $15 cost (in USD) for each computer that is included with an upgrade coupon.

The Upgrade Coupon will allow a customer to download Windows 7 via a Microsoft web site once launched. Microsoft will also send a retail copy of the OS to the customer. The purpose of the upgrade program is to prevent customers from holding off computer purchases until Windows 7 is launched, which would be a hit to the computer industry. The netbook industry is of concern because most netbooks are powered by Windows XP, which are not eligible for the upgrade program.

HP has said that the company will participate in the upgrade program as well, but declined to offer any additional details until a formal announcement from Microsoft is made.

I was hoping that Microsoft would be the one willing to take the hit and take the cost or decrease the cost of the upgrade program after Apple’s announcement of a $29 upgrade.

Or maybe they have? Still, free upgrades and the likelihood of companies offering coupons at cost sounds good to me =)

      Why buy old hardware.

The version of Windows 7 that will be sold on or after October 22nd will include DirectX 11.

DirectX 11 video cards are not expected to be generally available until Windows 7 launches or soon after so you will be getting DirectX 10 graphics.

These PC makers aren’t doing this coupon gimick for anybody’s advantage but their own.

Don’t bite unless you absolutely need a new PC before October 22nd.

It’s a good idea also to make sure the CPU supports virtualization.

You are right, although I don’t think they’ll be offering any DX11 cards on laptops any time soon (at least probably not right at launch.)

Some people might not be able to wait until launch for a laptop and the coupon will be useful, but you are right, it just tempts the customers into false security when they can actually wait until October 22 (for those who can)
