The touch features of Windows 7 are getting a lot of attention as of lately. Long Zheng managed to get Windows 7 on Toshiba Portege M750 Tablet PC, which allowed him to demonstrate the touch panning abilities of Windows 7 (also known by some as kinetic scrolling.) This was also thanks to Rafael’s blue-badge tool that managed to unearth this feature out of the many other hidden features of Windows 7.
Panning in Windows 7 is much like the scroll features found on your iPod Touch or iPhone. Every application with a scrollbar will allow you to use your fingers to scroll or “pan” through the viewing area in any direction you’d like. However, in Zheng’s demo, he was unable to get this feature working “yet” with internet browsers. Windows also “bounce” if you reach the end-most point of the viewing area. If you’re looking forward to using these features, don’t forget that the laptop needs to offer touch support.
You can check out his video demo here. Keep in mind that the main video is a bit choppy due to video recording related reasons and is a poor representation of how smooth the actual experience is. The mini video in the bottom right corner shows how smooth the touch panning experience really is.
