Windows 7 to natively support DivX, Xvid, MKV, H.264, and transcoding

Windows 7 to natively support DivX, Xvid, MKV, H.264, and transcoding

For most Windows users, getting 3rd party codecs such as DivX and Xvid working hasn’t been a problem thanks to 3rd party solutions. However, native support means that other untech-savvy Windows users will be able to play content using these codecs right out of the box. Furthermore, Engadget had received word that H.264 and MKV will also be natively supported as well. What this means is not only can you finally play these videos properly on Windows Media Center, but you can also watch the content on an extender such as the Xbox 360. This means it can also convert instantly to a format that your extender supports. Since we are still in the “pre-beta” stage, there’s still no guarantee to see it make it into the final version.

Well it isn’t working yet in the 6801 build. MKV will not play at all and even Divx playback is sluggish (On a high spec system). Installing any kind of codec pack (CCCP) causes Win7 to BSOD when trying to create thumbnails. Even the wmplayer.exe doesn’t close when I shut down WMP. Of course this is still pre-beta software so I am not complaining as such…
I have always been able to play all formats very well in Windows Media Center.

    • Brian says:

I haven’t actually tried it out but thanks for pointing it out. I’m surprised CCCP doesn’t work properly. You can try using Media Player Classic, which is what I use for anything h.264, mkv, xvid, divx, etc. I don’t transcode so I don’t know too much about it. It’d be interesting to see how Windows 7 will affect third-party media player downloads like VLC.

    • Luther says:

Looks like DivX got MKV to work on Windows 7 via their Tech Preview on DivX Labs: labs.divx.com

It uses the Windows H.264 decoder, and generates thumbs, video info, and gets MKV to stream to Xbox 360.

  2. Mavrick says:

FYI: No native .mkv support in build 7000 either.

  3. Eric says:

Concerning this: Use Divx7…works perfectly, and can output 5.1. Windowws 7 won’t work, and VLC doesn’t work well with MKV files. Only Media Player Classic or Divx 7 will play them.

  4. steve says:

the CCCP codec pack works perfectly and plays all formats in Win7 (build 7000) including MKV. no need for Divx 7 or MPC

  5. Dan says:

Not in media center it doesn’t. build 7000 refuses to play mkv even when the file associations point to WMP. They will play in WMP after CCCP is installed, but not in media center.

  6. steve says:

Well I can assure you they play just fine for me only using CCCP in media center build 7000. Are you using the latest version of CCCP? I’m using build 2008-09-21. Maybe try updating to the latest build of ffdshow, I’m using rev2180_20081004.

  7. Dan says:

    Figured out the problem.

I’m using 64 bit, so for it to work in WMC 64 bit, it requires 64 bit components, which cccp doesn’t have, so now i’m using shark007′s win7 beta pack + x64 add-on.

  8. steve says:

    I’m also using x64

  9. Dan says:

    What can i say?

Before Shark007′s codec pack, and with using CCCP which has been my favourite pack since moving from K-Lite, MKV files wouldn’t play in WMC although they would play in WMP.

WMP is dual 64bit and 32bit, WMC is 64bit-only in the 64bit Ultimate version of Windows 7.

Regardless, with a clean install, ad with CCCP installed, WMC would complain it “couldn’t find the file”, and subsequently, since installing Shark007′s Codec pack for Windows 7 + 64bit components, it all works flawlessly.

    Dan.

  10. Dan says:

    WMC = Windows Media CENTRE 7 (64bit)
    WMP = Windows Media PLAYER 7 (32 & 64 bit)

    Dan.

  11. steve says:

I’m fully aware of the difference between media player and media center :)

I can also assure you that ALL video formats from mt2s to mkv are playing perfectly in Windows 7 x64 media center AND the x64 media player with only CCCP installed. The same goes for friends of mine also running the Win 7 x64 beta.

Had you checked within the FFDShow video config panel to make sure that libavcodec is the choice for H.264/AVC? It should be by default but it’s worth checking out…

  12. steve says:

    erm… m2ts even :S

  13. Hans says:

So, what about support with Extenders? Anyone who has Win7beta that tried to see if they can play mkv/divx natively within the media center interface on an extender?

I can play MKV, DivX etc wo a problem using Vista Media Center *locally*, but not playing it via an Extender. :(

    • Seasons says:

Yeah, there does not seem to be much on the extender apps side of this. Im using Linksys DMA2100, Any info on sites that have apps for Extenders to play DIVX 7 would be great.

  14. dd says:

    bullshit it wont play mkv’s

  15. dave says:

i have been playing mkv. files with windows 7 to xbox360 for about a week and i can say it works but plays like shit

  16. sam says:

The shark 007 coded pack PLUS the x64 extensions worked! I had been able to see video, but audio didn’t work. once installing the x64 extensions, the audio worked! thanks Dan for the info…
