We recently covered a somewhat sketchy claim on Windows 7 being able to decode, encode, and transcode a few of the popular media codecs. We’ve got even better news for you thanks to Zheng. Not only will the previously mentioned codecs be supported, everything else we didn’t mention in the above picture will also be supported as well. You can play all your favourite movies and video clips right out of the box without having to download any codec packs or third-party media players whatsoever. But it doesn’t stop there.
It seems like transcoding will also be built into the Windows 7 shell as well, meaning format conversion would be done on the fly in any situation where you have to transfer your videos from your computer another device such as your Xbox or MP3 Player.
However, there seems to be some limitations on maximum bitrates or resolutions. Other than that, this is good news for regular users that are not too tech-savvy. You can view the entire Powerpoint presentation on “Video Improvements for Windows 7″ here.
