The idea that Microsoft has to charge the peices they do to recoup costs is BS. Win 7 paid for itself the first year it was out. After original production the cost per disc should be about 10 cents so put it out at $100CDN and thats $99 a disc to go to pay wages and updates. They could also save money by removing the useless programs like windows DVD burner and replace it with a free program like IMGBURN or Nero 9 lite. Im very pleased with Win 7 and do appreciate M$ work on it and the fact that they arent trying to extort us like they did with the $300 Vista.

What do you mean? I'm not too sure about messengers but I'm going to run Starter on VM this weekend and get back to you. You can run as many instances of one program as you want.

If you use multiple IM services, I suggest using Pidgin or Trillian. I like Pidgin better, they both can log in to multiple IM services under one app.

There's really just Home Premium and Professional. Starter will come up as an option only when people are heading towards the laptop and notebook category, probably more towards netbook.

As long as MS focuses ALL marketing on home premium and professional and makes sure stores barely mention Starter or Ultimate at all, I think most people will be fine. Most people probably won't know (or shouldn't hear) about Ultimate unless they are techie enough.

This is what I think of Starter, it is actually a good thing providing that people UNDERSTAND the 3-app limit and that it cannot play DVDs.

I think companies will default equip these OSes on netbooks, while we see Starter as an option for notebooks.

You will never get a OS for home customers for below than 80€ (~100 US-$). Remember the costs Microsoft has, it is far more than a typical game, and this starts mostly at 40€.
