A lot of people’s first reaction after hearing about Windows 7 Starter’s three app-limit was that it was horrendous and they would do whatever they can to stay away from it. However, most of these thoughts were merely based upon opinions around Microsoft’s vague description of what was within the “three-app limit” of Starter.

Ed Bott from ZDNet ran Windows 7 Starter on his netbook for three weeks and found a few interesting facts. There is no limit on the amount of Windows you can have open, which means you can open any amount of windows for a single program. Also, some items don’t count towards the application limit:
Bott says that his overall experience with Starter on his “netbook” seemed fine, but expecting a “notebook” experience on Starter will probably frustrating. To read the full article about Bott’s experience with Starter, click here.
Will you consider to buy Windows 7 Starter now that you know the limitation is not as strict as you had originally thought? Let us know int he comments.

I suggest M$ should stop bringing out antifeatures.
Antifeatures, why should I have to pay for Win 7 Home Premium, if my netbook will not use half the features in home premium. Also most system function running as a service (Anti-virus windows, disk defragmentation software, control panel windows etc.) do not count against the 3 program limit.

This is what I think of Starter, it is actually a good thing providing that people UNDERSTAND the 3-app limit and that it cannot play DVDs.
I think companies will default equip these OSes on netbooks, while we see Starter as an option for notebooks.
It still sucks that they’re producing so many pointless copies. Create one version for the broad consumer, and one version for Business. Price the consumer version at Under £150, and the Business one at under £200. Job done, great sales, no confusion. It’s just stupid the amount of SKUs they push out (of their ***).
There’s really just Home Premium and Professional. Starter will come up as an option only when people are heading towards the laptop and notebook category, probably more towards netbook.
As long as MS focuses ALL marketing on home premium and professional and makes sure stores barely mention Starter or Ultimate at all, I think most people will be fine. Most people probably won’t know (or shouldn’t hear) about Ultimate unless they are techie enough.

Windows for home use should not be more that 30 euro per copy.
You will never get a OS for home customers for below than 80€ (~100 US-$). Remember the costs Microsoft has, it is far more than a typical game, and this starts mostly at 40€.
The idea that Microsoft has to charge the peices they do to recoup costs is BS. Win 7 paid for itself the first year it was out. After original production the cost per disc should be about 10 cents so put it out at $100CDN and thats $99 a disc to go to pay wages and updates. They could also save money by removing the useless programs like windows DVD burner and replace it with a free program like IMGBURN or Nero 9 lite. Im very pleased with Win 7 and do appreciate M$ work on it and the fact that they arent trying to extort us like they did with the $300 Vista.
It’s okay for normal people, but for professionel user it’s bad, because when I use ICQ and Firefox I can start only one more programm..
What do you mean? I’m not too sure about messengers but I’m going to run Starter on VM this weekend and get back to you. You can run as many instances of one program as you want.
If you use multiple IM services, I suggest using Pidgin or Trillian. I like Pidgin better, they both can log in to multiple IM services under one app.
