Ironically, as much as we hate Windows 7 Starter for its much criticized three-appplication limit, we may end up thanking Microsoft for making such a cheap product. (No pun intended) Microsoft hasn’t nailed down the specifics of Windows 7 Starter Edition yet, but Techradar reports that they are already suggesting vendors will utilise Starter to do whatever they can to lower netbook prices – to as low as $200.
“We have a couple of the OEMs continuing down a path to be very aggressive on price. It puts the pressure on everyone. We’re anticipating opening price points to reach about $200 at least in the US market this holiday season, and another $50 maybe for Nvidia Ion machines.”
Aside from being offered at such an extreme low cost, Microsoft ensures that battery life improvements and startup time will remain as their focuses even in the Starter edition. Microsoft says they will be OEMs closely to ensure startup expectatoins continue to be met even with possible pre-installed applications. In addition, Microsoft wants to ensure that laptops are ready to use out-of-the-box without the need to run any installations and configure pre-packaged software. In grim times like these, how does a $200 netbook sound for you?

looks pretty cool the idea.
If Windows is what is keeping them from making a $200 netbook, why is the HP Mini 1000 with Ubuntu still $350+?
…John makes a good point…
Microsoft conspires to pay the company to sell their OS. The company then takes the money and becomes satisfied and therefore is able to lower the prices on the netbook.
I’ve never thought of that and that’s a really good point. Makes me wonder what kind of deal they’re setting up. Tbh Geo, I’m not sure how much MS would be able to pay that would make up for the companies’ lost revenue in MS not-so-good condition right now
I was joking but you know…it could be reality.
I’m not getting a netbook anytime soon though. I’m waiting for a) bigger cheaper SSDs and b) the price to go sub-$150. Will either of these things happen soon? I hope but I don’t have high hopes. I know that if SSD prices drop, netbooks that use SSDs should see a drop in price also.
