Earlier today, ArsTechnica received confirmation from a Microsoft Employee that development on the RC branch has not yet begun. In fact, the latest build was compiled yesterday and is 7046; 21 days after Build 7032. Considering that Build 7032 was compiled 14 days after Build 7022, it seems that Microsoft is pushing builds out at a slower rate but it may because they are approaching the RC branch.
We did not post on this earlier because we were worried about the credibility of the sources.
However, Geeksmack was soon able to confirm their mistake:
When we said that build 7048.winmain_win7rc1.090211-1625 was compiled, we meant build 7041.winmain.090211-xxxx. We are unsure of the exact time that the build was compiled, but it was compiled on February 11th, and, according to the build tag, this isn’t in the RC branch of builds.
That was quite a big mistake… but the false rumor was also supported by German news site Winfutur. Either someone is trying to cover their tracks or the blogosphere was tipped off by an unreliable source. We will continue to update you on any progress made towards Windows 7 Release Candidate.
Update: Reputable JCXP.net forum member Paul received an email from Sinofsky confirming Microsoft is still working on build 7046.
