Windows 7 RC expected to be publicly released in May 2009

Update: Google Translate let us down so sorry for some incorrect info an hour ago. I have changed the information and confirmed with an actual Russian speaker =)

Previous rumors led us to believe that Microsoft would deliver RC for Windows 7 in April 10, 2009. However, Russian website wzor.net has reported that Microsoft has revised their schedule for Windows 7. These were the dates reported:

Release Candidate Dates:

  • Windows 7 RC escrow build and Windows Server 2008 R2 is scheduled for release on the fourth week of April 2009. They will be internal escrow builds.
  • Windows 7 RC1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be publicly released at the end of May 2009

Other Important Dates:

  • The most recent build compiled is 7061 and was compiled on March 11th, 2009
  • The Windows 7 pre-RTM Creative Test build will be compiled by the last week of July 2009
  • Distribution of Windows 7 RTM Master image will be distributed to Technet/MSDN subscribers in August 2009
  • Officially, the new products, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be presented at the IT Forum at the beginning of November 2009  (The source did not state clearly whether this would be a release, announcement, or demo and used a bad choice of words)
  • Office 14 Beta will show up in the first few days of July and won’t be public. Beta 2 will be released five months after. Office 14 RTM will be released sometime in the beginning of March 2010.

It’s good to see that Microsoft is putting a lot of thought into the development process and timeline of Windows 7. Hopefully the revised schedule means we will be seeing a much more stable and refined Windows 7.

    This is good news!

  2. Claus1221 says:

Ahm, the title says RTM is end of July, but the content says November, what is right?

  3. Master1 says:

It seems as if Microsoft is having problems with the RC, first at the end of February, then April 10, now this. This is surprising, considering how strong the beta was. Well, hopefully this will make it even better.

  4. Master1 says:

Just thought of this. RC-Escrow means a code-freeze, meaning that technically Windows 7 will be done by the end of April.

  5. Master1 says:

Well hopefully the Escrow RC1 will get leaked then =D

Well this is really good news. :)

If the dates are accurate (which they seem to be at a first glance), it’s most likely that the presentation of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in November will be equal to an official launch announcement for so called “general availability” of the product.

The timespan between RTM Master image release and the official launch will probably serve as a sort of breathing period for Microsoft and also as an implementation period of last-minute tweaks.

    • Eoraptor says:

Yeah… It also allows OEM’s and vendors to finalize their drivers and have them ready for building images when the RTM is made available. Still, good to see some ~apparently~ concrete info on production.

Though I have to agree, given how generally stable (not wholly, but by-and-large) the Beta builds since 7022 have been, its odd to push things back yet again unless there’s some show stopping bug the community is not yet aware of.

      • dev1ant says:

You’re right that it’s odd that the RC build has been slightly postponed.

I was for example half expecting to see the much debated changes to the UAC being implemented already in the latest pre-RC builds (i.e. 7048 and 7057), but as it seems that has not happened.

However though, this slight delay in regards to time aspects might as well be exactly what Microsoft needs in order to get Windows 7 up to speed with Beta-testers and manufacturer’s demands.

So all in all it might not be as bad as it may seem. :)

As they say “it’s better to be safe then sorry”, and I believe that Microsoft definetly have taken this lesson into account from previous development experiences, and the problems they faced with Vista.

  9. Michel says:

I am sure everyone will be waiting for the link, nut i sincerely think if microsoft is releasing this soon they will no doubt run into problems like vista.
