Windows 7 RC will let you turn even more features off

IE haters rejoiced a few days ago when they learned that IE could be “turned off” from the Windows Features menu. Recently, Microsoft announced that the list of features that can be turned on or off will be expanded in the release candidate of Windows 7. Now you can virtually turn off every built-in “program” or “feature” in Windows 7.

Windows 7 RC will let you turn even more features off

Unlike a complete “uninstall”, turning off one of these features does not actually remove the files from the system. The purpose of turning off these features is so that files won’t be loaded by the operating system or be available to users. The files will continue to remain on your computer so should you ever need to re-enable a feature, there would be no need to go grab your installation CD.

In addition to the list of features in Vista, these items were newly added to the list in Windows 7:

* Windows Media Player
* Windows Media Center
* Windows DVD Maker
* Internet Explorer 8
* Windows Search
* Handwriting Recognition (through the Tablet PC Components option)
* Windows Gadget Platform
* Fax and Scan
* XPS Viewer and Services (including the Virtual Print Driver)

With so much free and open-source software out there right now (that some may argue are better alternatives than Microsoft’s programs), do you think there is a need for Microsoft to continue offering an out-of-the-box browser or media player?

    Not sure about WMP, but I think IE should still be included. After all, how are you going to download other browsers’ installers if you don’t have a browser to start with?

  2. Brian-the-Snail says:

    You can always use Windows Explorer to get the Browser of your choice, so no problem.

  3. Cyvros says:

    How exactly would you do that, though? I thought that since Vista, Windows Explorer pulls up the default browser when a URL is entered in its address bar.

    WMP and IE8 are out of the question. WMP12 is so beautiful _>; Seriously, Opera must die. Because only 0,000002% use Opera. Just… die, y/y?

      Let’s type it again.

      “WMP and IE8 are out of the question. WMP12 is so beautiful, and IE8′s Jumplist pwns. How would we download Firefox if we didn’t have IE? Opera and EU are crazy. Opera must die, because only 0,000002% use Opera(plus its UI sucks). Just die, y/y?

  5. WMP12 is great, but browser is not about looks so, I’ll still prefer other browsers over IE8, IE sucks big time :(

    It’s more of an antitrust / lawsuit avoiding issue rather than what MS really wants done.
