Windows 7 Pricing Details Leaked (Rumor?)

Windows 7 Pricing Details Leaked (Rumor?)

Update 2: The prices have been released. Click here for pricing info. Click here for preorder info to save up to $100 on Windows 7.

Update: After taking another look at the pricing, I’m calling this a rumor because it is rather strange that Starter has received a retail price when it is only being offered to OEMs. What do you think the pricing leaks? Let us know in the comments.

After Microsoft’s announcement about there being 6 editions or Windows 7 SKUs, German news website Windows Secrets claims to have pricing details for each Windows 7 version.

As stated before, the only ones mainly affecting the majority of consumers are the Home Premium and Professional editions of Windows 7.

Windows 7 Starter will not be available at retail and can be pre-installed by OEMs on netbooks. Windows 7 Home Basic will only be available in emerging markets. Windows 7 Enterprise will only be sold in volume licenses. And Windows 7 Ultimate will be offered as an upgrade to those who want the features of Windows 7 Professional along with the security features and IT tools that come with Enterprise.

Edition / SKU Pricing
Windows 7 Starter $199.95
Windows 7 Home Basic N/A
Windows 7 Home Premium $259.95
Windows 7 Professional $299.95
Windows 7 Enterprise N/A
Windows 7 Ultimate $319.95

I am aware that these prices may not be the exact prices because they are romored abd have been “leaked”. I feel that if these prices are even close to what will be the actual price and these are upgrade prices ( not a full install) the public consumer would be better of buying whatever flavor of vista they want and do the free upgrade. I understand this is a business (microsoft)but in my opinion Bill Gates is already a multi-billionaire and could actuslly lower prices by atleast $100 and still come out way ahead. No offense but the man makes more money when he sleeps than any of us in a lifetime!!
When I installed windows 7 beta and used the upgrade I had a few issues with hardware and software however when my classmates did a “clean” install they had no problems at all except with the 64 bit.
We used diffrent laptops such as : Alienware,HP,Acer,Gateway, and Dell, and windows 7 worked good on all but mine (acer). But Anyway thanks for the estimated price list on the new Windows!!

Hey, I didn’t even consider the upgrade paths when I wrote this post. What you said is right, I am sure Windows 7 prices will match or be lower than Vista’s, otherwise users can just buy the Vista equivalent and upgrade!

Bill Gates is probably still a shareholder of Microsoft but he no longer works there btw.

And I noticed more bugs with 64-bit too, thought it was strange so I went back to 32-bit. 64-bit was very unstable for me.

microsoft needs the money to grow. Its also the only US that is widely used. It literally has no competition right now so they have the right to sell it @ w/e cost.

Kind of like how APple owns mp3 market. Theyre leader in that area so they dont have to lower their ipod touch price.

  2. shady_in_florida says:

I new bil gates no longer owned microsoft, i guess I assumed he still makes more money than we will in a life time. Windows 7 has a few differnt features that are better than vista and the graphics are alot better even with an older GPU graphics card (nvidia-8600GT). and the speed of the OS is much faster also. I like windows 7 just by what ive expirienced in the 3 wees i had it. Ive also heard rumors of the release date ranging anywhere from 0ct 2009 to Lan 13 2010. If they do plan on releaseing it in Oct. (highly doubtful) they need to get to work so they dont have another VISTA on there hands. In my opinion as for now there are doing good with alot of the problems and I hope they will get a good clean OS with the release of 7.

  3. Kiwi says:

I too have used Win 7 since it was first relesed to Public Beta and it was already way better than Vista RTM. I currently own Vista home premium and I’ve been happy with it up to Now.
My only regret is that having used Win 7 I am now going to have to pay for another Os only 2 years after buying Vista.
I broke Win 7 Beta only once, (which means I had to re-install it), and since that time know matter what I’ve done with it, it has been an extremely Stable OS.
Please, Guys and Girls at Microsoft, could you price Windows 7 accordingly, for us that took the plunge with Vista.
Those that upgrade from Xp to Windows 7 will have a bigger learning time than those that upgrade from Vista, but one would suppose that to be the case anyways.
To all those people involved in Windows 7, You’ve done yourselves proud. Congratulations to you all.

    Cheers,
    Kiwi

  5. Huxley says:

Ok heres an idea Microsoft. Lower the price to $50 dollars ..sell 10000% more genuine copies than you will at the proposed prices and make more money. See I should be the CEO.
No one would consider a pirate copy at those prices and therefore you kill two birds with one price cut.

    • just_a_fan says:

      @huxley

yes, if they lowered their pricing to be on par with Apple, or lower (not to mention easing up on the DRM ala WGA a bit) it would do VERY well…

  6. Dumb Cracka says:

Makes no difference. As soon as the final release is published, it’ll be cracked and on the torrents within minutes.

Why do people pirate? Because of corporate greed. Pure and simple. You can argue “nobody’s holding a gun to your head to buy/use their product” but the fact of the matter is….yes, they are (of course not literally).

Vendor hardware support for any other OS (with the exception of Macs) is a joke. You have to have top of the line hardware for other OS’s (like Ubuntu) to be recognized & working, whereas with Windows even crappy no-name brand hardwares work flawlessly. Microsoft has created an empire, there’s no doubting that.

They have hardware vendors bending over backwards to make sure their hardware is Windows “certified”. Needless to say, “Windows Certified” equals more sales for the hardware manufacturer. With all the attention Windows receives from hardware vendors, open source software (such as Ubuntu) will always be struggling to get hardware to be recognized/work with patches and/or trial and error. Of course the “average user” has no patience for this. Computer users are so accustomed to PNP and expect their hardware to work within minutes. Linux users try and try and TRY to get their systems running perfectly, but it takes time due to the lack of support.

I know this because I happen to run both operating systems, and have so for years.
But of the two OS’s, I’d chose Linux time and time again. Buying into Microsoft and bitching and complaining about how over-priced they are is like buying a gas-guzzling SUV and then complaining about high gas prices. LOL.

Microsoft is over rated. Perhaps it’s time you considered open source software. It’s more secure, it’s rewarding to be a part of the Linux community (because you have the opportunity to give feedback which will be implemented in the next set of updates) & ummmm….hello? IT’S FREE!

    Peace out bitches!

    • Alejandro Nova says:

Actually, it’s the opposite with Linux. No-name hardware usually works flawlessly in Linux, because no-name-brands tend to use standards instead of proprietary interfaces. See this.

      1. You buy a brand new El Cheapo webcam (made by Melody Pig Technologies Oink from China).
      2. You plug it in a computer with Linux.
      3. IT WORKS! Is it a miracle? No! Your El Cheapo camera uses UVC, and Linux supports all UVC webcams.

Try to connect your Logitech webcam and see what happens. Hint: pray. A lot.

Another one. Try to connect ANY (and I do mean ANY) soundcard that ISN’T A CREATIVE LABS SOUND BLASTER X-FI into a Linux computer. It will work. Flawlessly. The only non-working card is the Creative one, and that’s because Creative Labs had made everything under the sun to ensure themselves that their card will never be supported under Linux.

El Cheapo keyboards work. El Cheapo mice work. Webcams and everything China-made, El Cheapo-brand, works FLAWLESSLY in Linux. Chinese second-rate peripherals? They DO WORK!. I plugged even a phony NOK serial cable (yes, a KIRF cable) for a Nokia phone, into a Linux computer, and it worked under Linux! USB interfaces? Sound acceleration? They all work like XP (that means: better than Vista).

      2009 Linux isn’t 2003 Linux. It is a LOT better. A LOT.

      • Dumb Cracka says:

        Hmmmm,

You make some interesting points. I’ve found by my experience(s) that it’s usually the other way around, but I guess we each have our own experience(s), so to each his own.

Anyways Windows 7 will be a complete flop. Some saps will buy into it. Others, will just download illegally.

Either way, I prefer my Ubuntu. :)

      • aj says:

I agree 2009 linux is sooooo much better, it’s like night and day. I use ubuntu 9.04 and i’ve never had a problem with hardware. It’s free, secure, nice looking with compiz, not a whole lot that i can’t do with it. I’ve noticed more and more how there are .deb version MS software to download.

  7. Mac Hater says:

Lower to Apple levels?!?! What planet are you from??

Anything Mac/Apple costs twice as much or more to the Windows/PC equivalent.

Apple/Mac people are such elitists that they would not except paying less!!!

    • Spade says:

Just announced today: Mac OS X Leopard users can upgrade to Snow Leopard (the next version of OS X) for just $29. Mac Hater, I eagerly await your response to this news.

And I’m sure the chairs are flying in Redmond now. How foolish does this make Microsoft look? Apple’s upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard costs a fraction of what Vista users will have to pay to upgrade to 7ista.

      • Tepid says:

The reason apple can charge 29$ for an OS is cause they charge $3000 for their hardware. go price the difference for the same hardware on MAC vs PC. It’s all Intel.

MAC is hardware and OS software company, MS are generally an OS company. If they built around specific models of hardware like MAC does, then MS could sell their systems for $3000 also, they would be more stable, and you would have less options (like you do with MAC). Would you be complaining then?

        Apples and Oranges

      • Not a MAC lover BUT ... says:

Tepid, I know Apple charge over the top for Hardware but the mac OS can now be run on PC hardware, has been able to for a while BTW, so that argument goes out the window :) (see http://osx86.thefreesuite.com/leo_intel.php for one install guide :) )

Microsoft realy have to get their pricing lower, I might be able to get this at a cheaper price in the UK because my son is still in school so I can get a student licence …… Cheating I know but! :)

  8. Shaunak says:

Unless MS want to shoot themselves in the foot, they better slack the prices across the board by 50$-75$s atleast.

  9. Dr Munki says:

Lets not get into the who’s got a bigger dick, Bill or Steve. I’m using Windows 7 x64 and it’s been absolutley fine, Vista stayed on my PC for about 2 hours.

  10. Sebastian says:

Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard Upgrade: $29
Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard Family Pack Upgrade (5 licenses): $49

    Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard Full $95.99
Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard Full Box Set (OS X, iLife, iWork): $124.99
Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard Full Box Set (OS X, iLife, iWork) Family Pack (5 licenses): $147.99

There is no serial number for any version of Mac OS X.
There are only two versions of the Macintosh OS: Client and Server.

  11. Tepid says:

“mac OS can now be run on PC hardware, has been able to for a while BTW, so that argument goes out the window (see http://osx86.thefreesuite.com/leo_intel.php for one install guide)”

Not legally, no. You are not allowed by Apple EULA to legally install MAC OS on any other hardware other than Apples.

Quote: “Psystar, apparently in open violation of Apple licensing rules that forbid installation of its operating systems — including the Leopard OS — on third-party hardware, has been selling Mac clones through its Web site since April.” and “Apple is charging Psystar with violating its copyrights and weakening its brand image. “By misappropriating Apple’s proprietary software and intellectual property for its own use, Psystar’s actions harm consumers by selling them a poor product that is advertised and promoted in a manner that falsely and unfairly implies an affiliation with Apple,” the company said in its complaint.” end quote.

So, who is the bigger dick. Apple or MS?
Apple, cause they over charge for hardware they don’t even design or manufacture.

Yes, Mac can be installed on PC hardware, But you are not allowed. If Apple went OS only, and licesned out like MS and allowed the OS to be installed on any hardware, then MAC OS would cost as much as Windows. End of Story.
