Last week, retailers pushed out Windows 7 preorder offers that would allow customers to save up to 58% on Windows 7. Microsoft made a competitive move on pricing for single-user licenses but many wondered why any news of a family pack was still absent.
Turns out that Microsoft will be selling Windows 7 Home Premium family packs after all. Kristan Kenney spotted an interesting clause in the Microsoft Software License Terms of Home Premium that indicated this. The family pack will contain three user licenses.
2. INSTALLATION AND USE RIGHTS.
a. One Copy per Computer. Except as allowed in Section 2 (b) below, you may install one copy of the software on one computer. That computer is the “licensed computer.”b. Family Pack. If you are a “Qualified Family Pack User”, you may install one copy of the software marked as “Family Pack” on three computers in your household for use by people who reside there. Those computers are the “licensed computers” and are subject to these license terms. If you do not know whether you are a Qualified Family Pack User, visit go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?Linkid=141399 or contact the Microsoft affiliate serving your country
The family pack option seems to be only offered with the Home Premium SKU, which makes perfect sense when taking into consideration how Microsoft has been marketing its Windows 7 SKUs. There is no word on pricing for the family packs yet. It is likely that the Windows 7 Home Premium family pack will cost a bit more than the full edition single-user license, which will retail for $199 USD.
Microsoft has been making a strong effort to satisfy users after the negative response to Vista. Many users were particularly concerned about the pricing, especially those who have purchased Windows Vista. Apple’s Snow Leopard family pack is a five-user license and will retail for $49 for Intel-generation Macs.

Do you guys think Microsoft made a mistake by not announcing the family pack earlier?
Many users are concerned after purchasing multiple licenses of Windows 7, only to hear of such news. But 3 copies of Windows 7 Home Premium preorder are only $150, which is “still” less than one copy of Home Premium. I think MS is already set on pricing so that it won’t rip people off, but they still should have announced it earlier…
Well, in my opinion, I don’t really think it is Microsoft’s fault for not releasing that information sooner, I think it’s the Customers Fault for Jumping the gun, and Getting themselves in one big darn hurry. No one has patience anymore. They want it right here and right now despite the consequences later. I guess the world will never learn.
I think it you YOU is who jumping the gun – that is jumping to conclusions. You say noone has patience anymore, but you’re obviously not aware of what the pre-order entails.
People aren’t rushing to buy it now because its the latest thing they have to have in their hands right now, theyre pre-ordering to get it at HALF price, which in this economy is appreciated. (even though those that just bought comupters with vista shouldn’t even have to buy Windows 7 at all)
As well, those buying it now on pre-order must have some degree of PATIENCE, since it won’t be in their hands til sometime in October.
It is definitely Microsofts fault for not releasing it earlier, and it probably wasn’t an aftersight, but a planned marketing ploy. Even if I buy 2 licenses now at half price, then later buy the family license, I’m sure I’ll be able to sell the first 2 at a profit.
Excuse me, But Explain to me how I am jumping the gun or Jumping to conclusions for waiting until W7 is on the shelves before I buy it, Sure I can buy it at half the price now, But what am I really getting until I see it’s outcome. Until you can magically travel into the future to gain some knowledge of the Final Disk based “shelved” release of Windows 7′s success, Then your post is pretty much pointless. Also, This website alone is proof that people are in a rush and want W7 just as fast as they can get it, as well as many other “torrent” sites. I myself actually observe before I make any moves what so ever. There are many bright people in the world who like to use that method. Why? Two words. Windows Vista.
Bluetwishy: “It is definitely Microsoft’s fault for not releasing it earlier, and it probably wasn’t an aftersight, but a planned marketing ploy.”
WoW, and According to you, I’m the one jumping to conclusions before I know the facts.
LoL. Something Told me to wait until the Final product of Windows 7 hits the shelvs before I buy it. Having Patience Really Pays off in the end.
It’s not final yet, since they haven’t announced it if they want to they can just pull it from the EULA.
