It’s been a while since we’ve heard any rumors about the Windows 7 release date, but it seems like one of Microsoft’s employees might have revealed a little more than the usual “three years after Vista” response. According to Reuters, Microsoft’s Chief Financial Officer said on April 23rd that Windows 7 could be out as early as July. In the past, that could mean anywhere from July to January 2010 but with Microsoft already prepared to launch the public RC, this date certainly means more than it would a few months ago. By releasing it this early, Microsoft would be able to take advantage of back-to-school sales and Christmas season sales.
When do you think Microsoft will release Windows 7?

I certainly agree Windows 7 RTM will be here by Summer. Taking into consideration that Windows 7 is not a monumental architectual change as Vista was, but building on the foundation of Vista similar to Windows XP building on the foundation of Windows 2000.
Microsoft made no mention of a possible RC2 in the future, RC’s test cycle usually are a couple months:
XP – June to July 2001
Vista – September to October 2006
I would put the total time of feedback Microsoft is looking for with the Windows 7 RC is from May to June, with the RTM most likely reaching here by July and general availability in September.
I was thinking that with the announcement of their new XP Mode, that they may need a bit of extra time to test that now. You could be right though
The XP mode will be an extra download from what I understand so it wont be too important to have that available from the initial OS retail.
Ya it will be but why wouldn’t it be important? Seven wouldn’t be any good if someone bought Professional after being convinced by XP Mode, only to encounter bugs along the way. I think XP Mode will be important too, we’ll see how well it does when they release it with the RC.
I think MS is pretty confident with it though seeing that they release this for testing so late.
I am saying that it will most likely be downloaded later after the Windows 7 retail once its tested and mostly bug free. Its more important for them to get the OS finished and out for retail.
~! I agree with this timeline, dates !~
{ My intellectual readings of Windows 7 information over many months }
October
Does this mean the RTM will be out in july or the retail Windows 7? windows 7 wouldnt be ready for retail by july and would need until 0ctober or november before its fully ready with all manufacturers having their drivers ready for windows 7.
I also don’t believe it would retail by July but was just doing my job of reporting what was said. July RTM would be really quick. Maybe the RC went better than expected. I’m still expecting an September/Oct RTM and November elease.
I can see OEM’s have systems ready by the end of July for back to school at the earliest. Remember Win7 uses the same drivers setup as Vista, so it would be very easy to get their system running stable.
Legacy hardware will be hit or miss on the retail end.
I thinking November for retail sales.
Agreed.
But i feel RTM by September and public by Jan 2010..as far as i have read
Hi, i’m Oliver, from Italy. I’m reading this blog from many mounths but it’s my first comment.
I think that Windows 7 will be released from September to November. Hovewer, im’ sure that the RTM will be out in Summer.
I am still having problems playing games under win7 RC, I hope these problems are fixed.
I to have had issues with the Battle Field series, which games are not working for you?
As long as its here before October 13th, I’ll have a very happy birthday!
What does this early release mean for the support cycle of Windows Vista?
The good thing about basing Win7 on the Vista core is that programs are compatible with both and support should be on going for as long as MS uses the same core.
Win7 is what Vista should of been but MS lost it way on that dev., so if it runs on Win7 it should run on Vista.
I believe that DX11 is also support on Vista.
Wouldn’t mind seeing a RTM hit in July, but would rather not see retail until later in the year.
I hope some focus is put on x64 version – the Vista x64 implementation was a total disaster, and Office x64 was even worse.
Does anyone knows whar anti-virus protection works with W7??(a very good one)!
I’m using NOD32 (creacked version) and theres a white flag sayng that this verson is in a format that is no longer supported!
I’m using Kaspersky, and it’s great. During the beta, I also tried Norton and Trend Micro, but came back to Kaspersky. Just be sure you’re using the version specifically for windows 7. It’s also a pre-release version, but it’s free and they give you a 6 month license, which should put us past the Retail release (if the October 23 date everyone’s throwing around is really right). There’s a link to it, and several other antivirus products right inside the Windows 7 security center.
