Windows 7 can stream media to Xbox 360 and PS3 out of the box

Starting from Windows 7 Release Candidate, anyone with an Xbox 360 or PS3 will be able to stream media to their consoles from the PC right out of the box. Previously, users had to install “special REG files” in order to do so. Hardcoreware was able to obtain an “advance copy” of Windows 7 RC and test its streaming capabilities with consoles. The Xbox 360 was able to stream video with both UPnP and the Windows Media Extender, while the PS3 could only stream through UPnP.

Four codecs were tested in total: AVCHD, MP4, MOV, and Xvid/DivX. The good news is that all codecs worked in both circumstances, with the exception of AVCHD and MP4 which did not work with an Xbox 360 and UPnP combination. There is still quite a bit of time for Microsoft to update the 360′s dashboard to make it more Windows 7 friendly. For the time being, appreciate Microsoft’s efforts in making your streaming experience with consoles much easier.

We see great news everyday. This will be a GOOD Windows.

Actually, Windows 7 has been doing this for quite a few builds … maybe since Beta 1.

Some of the cataloging features have been a little rough around the edges, but that seems to be mostly straightened out by RC1.

I’m still a little unhappy with the quality streaming to the PS3. Looks pretty jaggy on the 55″ screen; however, using another computer running Windows 7 MC, hooked to the TV directly over HDMI and streaming the same videos wirelessly (N), looks fantastic.

I wish there were some settings to decide on quality, resolution, bandwidth, etc.

  3. I gotta be the devil advocate here and mention: MP4 file format isn’t CODEC, but media container and in can include inside almost any codec.

I’ve notice A big difference Using 7 RC and streaming to a 360 vs media streaming device such as a DSM-520 (Dlink)

The qulity on the DSM-520 looks like a video playing from a VHS tape (doesn’t look that great)However on the 360 looks pretty darn good.

I agree with what Kreigz said about some kind of settings to decide the quality

Yeah but now you have to have special rights to have both connected at same time.

Thanks ms….lost my (need 30 days in a row thing in a game because I lost net access at 29).

How about making an os that won’t be freaked out by a ps3 or xbox 360 trying to connect to the same internet connection.

How bout it. Had trouble on xp..but got it to work.

Still can’t get a simple thing as a ps3 or xbox 360 to use the same fracking internet as my pc. How hard is that.
