It is still a bit early to start benchmarking builds of Windows 7, but for comparison’s sake, Adrian Kingsley-Hughes from ZDNet did some benchmarking work. The operating systems tested were 32-bit XP, Vista, Windows 7 Build 7000, and 64-bit Windows 7 Build 7000, and Windows 7 Build 7048. The five operating systems were tested in 31 different real-life scenarios and were given a placement of 1 to 5 based on how well each operating system performed compared to the rest.
So for example, Build 7048 (64-bit) was given a score of 1 for having the fastest boot-up time. Windows XP SP3 received a 5 for having the slowest.
The tests were done on the following two machines:
Performance for the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 improve as the builds progress with Windows 7 Build 7048 (64-bit) outperforming all the other operating systems on the higher-spec AMD machine. But on the slightly lower-end Intel machine, Windows 7 Build 7000 (32-bit) outperformed the other operating systems. It’s a shame that a comparison between 32-bit Windows 7 builds wasn’t made, but at least we know that steady progress in performance is being made as the builds progress.
