Update: Windows 7 Beta is being released on January 9th, 2009. Read this post for more information!
When Steve Sinofsky told everybody at PDC 2008 that Beta 1 would ship sometime early next year, apparently he meant really early.
A recent blog post from Microsoft Architect Evangelist, Bob Familiar, reveals that those attending the MSDN Developers Conference will receive their very own copy of Windows 7 Beta 1. MSDNDC takes place from December 9th 2008 to February 19th 2009 in a number of states.
Keith Combs from Technet saw this post, and further clarified by revealing that the target date for the Windows 7 Beta 1 release is January 13, 2009:
My understanding is that the DVD will not be ready for the first few show dates but will be mailed to each attendee. We are targeting to have the DVD’s in the materials from 1/13/2009 on. So I would imagine the folks attending the Houston, Orlando and Atlanta shows this month will receive their DVD’s around mid January as well. That’s an assumption on my part. Could be earlier or later, but they will get them. Make sure your Microsoft profile has the correct address.
Microsoft has been very careful not to make any PR mistakes, so seeing some kind of light being shed by one of Microsoft’s own should mean an actual Beta 1 release on January 13th.
Seeing that next year’s CES takes place from January 8th to 11th, just a few days before the Beta 1 release, we have good reason to believe Windows 7 Beta 1 will be unveiled at the show. Popular technology journalist Ed Bott has no doubt that this will happen as well.
Beta 1 will no doubt cause a stir in the blogosphere on the day of its release. Some bloggers have been quick to criticize the pre-beta, but what we’re seeing so far is only a piece of what Windows 7 really is.

DVD’s? The DVD’s what? Why the use of the possessive here? Brutal!
OR since DVD is an abbreviation, an apostrophe can mistakenly be added to represent plurality; for example, when using no punctuation, as in, “DVD,” it is correct to use a lowercase “s” at the end. But if were punctuated as, “D.V.D.” then an apostrophe s is needed: D.V.D.’s. It’s a common mistake, but it is generally acceptable to use ‘s at the end of abbreviations.

@Joel, SHUT UP YOU NERD!
i hope it’s not buggy… like all the windows releases we’ve been seeing
They’re supposed to be buggy. We’re talking about pre-beta and beta here for crying out loud
The pre-beta build 6801 is even more stable than past beta builds for Vista or XP
Why are you all excited about this? Doesn’t anyone remember how utterly awful the betas of XP and Vista were? They ran terribly slow (due to all the debug processes), crashed on a 5-minute basis, had most of the shiny new functionality disabled, and the driver support was nonexistent.
Call me when are looking at an RC or GM. Then I’ll get excited.
If that is the case, I hope they remove the debug processes from the release version of Vista because it still is slow as shinola.
Windows 7 = Windows vista.
YOU DONT FOOL ME MICROSOFT!
they want to sell the same thing with a diferente name.
its not like we are buying it anyways.
When was you’re last English class, Trevor? It’s always been acceptable to use an apostrophe-S to make capitalized words plural. LIke, “I made four A’s last semester.”
When was your last English class, Mike? It’s always been the rule that you’re means you are and does not denote possession (as does your).
Haha, pwned. Mike you suck!
omg – Are you guys really that dense? Don’t you realize Mike made that mistake on purpose as a joke!? Wow.
The early release means either 2 things. We’re all going to be disappointed by the lack of changes seen in Beta 1. Their testing went extremely well and they’re more than prepared to have the beta ready by then. I just hope it’s the latter
Using apostrophe-s to pluralize abbreviations is technically acceptable, yes… But it’s also considered old fashioned and illogical by many grammarians.
Note that I am not a grammar expert. I just play one on anonymous internet forums.
Microsoft has excellent dev tools these days so it’s not surprising that they’re getting agile with their products.
I really don’t think Apple or Linux have the frameworks to keep up with Microsoft at this point. I’ll admit I don’t know much about either of them but it seems like a lot of pretty hacks on old systems.
It’s just an improved interface..KDE4 is an entire Desktop Environment thats been roughly in development for the same amount of time as Windows 7 i think less. KDE4.2 is shaping up to be the best yes even better than windows 7 or GNOME – then i can’t speak for Mac’s – and thats plan to be release January 27 then brought to distribution’s. KDE4.3 should appear a little after windows 7 is final and bring far more improvements.
So don’t say windows is development is faster off this info. An entire desktop environment was built ground up in the time Windows 7′s Vista improvement tweaks were done. You can consider them comparable i suppose.
Pretty hacks? Most people who work on linux don’t allow pretty hacks to stick around.
Also Linux does have a wonderful framework with C++/Qt(/KDE 4.x libs is wanted) ~ High paced efficient development.
Though what is lacked is tools for optimizing there are some for linux the best ones are on MacOSX though.
I have to say that at least Microsoft are trying to do something about their release dates.
If they can get it right, they’ll shut a few detractors up. Only a few mind. Some people just love to hate them.
Fully Agree.
Not to mention, build 6801 is probably the most stable we’ve ever seen out of all the betas in windows’ history
I can agree, I have the PDC build *oddly* from the PDC and installed it once I got back, and I must say everything runs and works fine. Not seen any issues with it yet and been using it as my main OS since then.
All installed and running with everything I had under Vista.
So for me I am happy that they (MS) are moving in the right direction.
S.
6956 is actually more instable than 6801 for me. I’ve been getting weird GUI errors like blank spots on the screen
That may make sence. The first PDC build was much older and probably had a little more testing before heading for the masses.
I suspect the Beta1 in Jan 09 will be much the same slightly older than current build at the time but alot better quality wise.
I cannot wait as it fixes one issue with some hardware I have under Vista which wont work to working fine under 7.
Shucks! I am in the end of a large project and cannot make those dates! Is there any way to signup for the beta sans going?
Previous digging leads me to believe that this would be offered via Microsoft Connect. But in these days, ThePirateBay seems like a very good option as well
>>Some bloggers have been quick to criticize the pre-beta
hahaha, there is one person who did not get invited to the party at PDC 2008 and he was the only person who gave 7 a negative review at PDC
haha, what did you think of his debate with Thor?
hahaha
i was curious if anyone knows how an non msdn user can be accepted in the windows 7 beta. i would love to beta test the OS.
Probably piratebay
but rumors were up and around previously that it would be delivered via Windows Connect. I’ll make sure to fill you guys in if that is the case but I would recommend signing up an account for now just in case
After a several months of trying to get on with Vista, I finally scaked it off and reverted back to XP, what a relief! I hope Windows 7 brings a lot more than it appears to be promising at the moment.
