Microsoft today announced the pricing for Windows Anytime Upgrade (WAU) and Family Packs with Windows 7.
Windows Anytime Upgrade Pack Details:
The Windows Anytime Upgrade Pack will allow a user to upgrade from their existing SKU to a higher one. (For example: Windows 7 Starter to Home Premium.) These packs contain an upgrade key that will allow the upgrade and will be in stores starting October 22nd. Microsoft states that the upgrade should take no more than 10 minutes since no installation media is required. “Your current programs, files, and settings will remain intact.” The step-by-step experience of going through an upgrade is outlined here.
You can also choose the more environmental option and purchase the key online in one of the following 13 countries: Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK or the US
Windows Anytime Upgrade Pricing:
To Home Premium To Professional To Ultimate
From Starter $80 / €74 / £70 $114 / €185 / £120 $165 / €205 / £140
From Home Premium $89 / €180 / £120 $140 / €190 / £150
From Professional $130 / €135 / £85
The option to upgrade is great for customers, but no so much the confusing pricing scheme. Upgrading from Professional to Ultimate costs $40 more than upgrading from Home Premium to Ultimate. Upgrade prices for the UK and Europe are almost double than the US prices in some cases as well.
Windows 7 Family Pack:
The Windows 7 Family Pack is basically a three-user license for Home Premium. It will be available in stores starting October 22nd and will retail for $150 in the US, and $200 in Canada, which results in savings of more than $200. Only information regarding Canadian and US markets were provided.

Someone might need to explain to my why Europe would want to pay three times as much as the US for the same upgrade? (Premium to Pro).
It’s probably cheaper to buy a full version of Pro than do that upgrade. :p

Be aware that if you choose to purchase the upgrade through the Microsoft Store, you WILL NOT get the upgrade key emailed to you for several hours. The upgrade IS NOT immediate, as their web site falsely tells you that it is. If you want to upgrade immediately, purchase the upgrade at your local retailer and use the key that comes with the purchase.
