Survey: Windows 7 adoption rate to be 3X higher than XP in its first year

Survey: Windows 7 adoption rate to be 3X higher than XP in its first year

Windows 7 is well on its way to becoming a major success for Microsoft, making Vista’s poor adoption rates a thing of the past. Scriptlogic, a software developer specializing in Windows management software, claims that there is a high acceptance of Windows 7 among small and medium businesses.

The survey was conducted with 1100 IT Professionals, and 41% of them have plans to deploy Windows 7 in their orgnaizations by 2010, which is 14 months after the release of Windows 7. Taking into consideration that it has become typical for most organizations to wait until SP1 before deploying a new opearting system, this is a big percentage. ScriptLogic also indicated that this is a strong adoption rate compared to the adoption rate of 12-14% Windows XP had in its first year. This makes Windows 7′s adoption rate three times higher than XP in its first year of release.

One of the questions asked respondents to choose from a list of five things that would prove to be the biggest barrier for them to deploy Windows 7. Time and Resources and Application Compatibility topped the list with 42.7% and 39.1% response respectively, while Migration of User Settings and Hardware Support had the lowest with 2.2% and 7.5% respectively.

Several news sites have reported that 60% of businessess will skip Windows 7, which is a flawed analysis. The survey does not state that 60% of businessess will skip Windows 7. It only states that 60% of the respondents do not have current plans to deploy Windows 7 by 2010. Most organizations don’t deploy a new operating system until the first Service Pack has been released.

Microsoft’s Bill Veghte stated at the Worldwide Partner Conference that they were expecting 77 million Windows 7 shipments by the end of 2010, and 59% of enterprises are expected to use Windows 7 in three years

  1. John says:

“making Vista’s poor adoption rates a thing of the past.”. Didn’t I hear from Microsoft that Vista was the fastest adopting in the history of Windows?

  2. Geo says:

Nah, we aren’t talking about what Microsoft says. We are talking about what Scriptlogic says. The survey is independent from Microsoft’s data or at least it should be. If it’s not, we’ve got some bias here.

  3. Glen says:

@John – No, Microsoft never said that. Some people in the media were saying it but the cold hard truth of Vista’s adoption rates are “they’re more or less the same as XP’s were”.

@Geo – yes this is an independant survey. No bias involved. No money involved.
