Rumor: New UI coming to Windows 7

Still wondering what that major announcement about Windows 7 from Microsoft could be? It could possibly be about a new UI coming to Windows 7. Paul Thurott reports that there are rumors that a new UI is coming for the RTM builds, and believes that it makes sense for Microsoft to save something like this until RTM as one last surprise for its fans. Thurott also insists that Microsoft is trying to keep excitement for Windows 7 high by being very selective on what information is revealed to the public.

In the past, Microsoft did make a huge UI change with XP but it was done so in Beta 2, which was still an early stage in development. In retrospect, Windows Whistler (XP) Build 2428 was the first build to contain the new Luna theme, which was a while before the RC came out. The introduction of a new UI during the RTM, especially when Microsoft has spent so much time fine-tuning and improving the current UI, seems unlikely. But just because Microsoft hasn’t included the new UI in any of the leaked builds yet, it doesn’t mean they haven’t been working on it. Then again, it also seems too late into the game to start making any drastic UI changes. Could Thurott be right? Only time will tell.

    Win7 sooo needs a face-lift!

it’s not that this visual style ISNT practical and functional, and its not like Win7 isnt vista-reloaded,

    BUT HEY

we deserve a new VS, if for nothing else, but to distinguish it from vista, which we all learned to hate, hence the vista VS is the ONLY thing we ‘hate’ in win7, isnt it? :)

I really Hope Microsoft pulls of an Amazing UI for this operating system. Looking At Windows 7 now, With the task bar appearing to be dumbed down to nothing but a long clear bar, And the rest of the UI looking exactly like windows vista, It seemed that Microsoft was running out of ideas. In my mind, I think that the UI of today’s operating systems are to far behind then what it should be. I feel Like it should be more Visually interactive so to speak. 3D, etc. I understand A lot of people really don’t care about all the eye candy, but rather more of security and stability, (And I do understand, And am keeping in mind, that security Threats arise all the time.) but lets face it, that is something that “Should” be a thing of the past, And lets hope with windows 7, it will be. I am very open minded about everyone’s opinions, and views about this kind of thing. I think giving the public a last minute surprise is something to be exited about, but as AL said, only time will tell.

I hope something cool will come out ;)

Here is Ed Bott’s take on anyone who knows who he is or follows him. I agree with him, but I don’t think PT will lie to get some hits, that would be very low of him:

Can somebody help me to make my OS(7077) genuine.

I know this is not related to the current topic but please help!

I activated it with that orbit’s activator. My windows gives a dialog saying “ur os is not genuine” every time i launch a win program like notepad, paint, picture viewer, etc. also can’t get updates, wat to do? Plz somebody reply.

This Link May Help you Harman.

Should give you an Activation Key, and therefore make your build genuine.

About the New UI. I hope your right AL. I am really hoping for a New UI in windows 7, and I totally agree with lakins about being reminded of a complete disaster’s UI. I can see how some may argue that microsoft is dead-set on keeping it the way it is now, But in my opinion, It seems like today, it is really hard to attract people to a new product if you don’t have that much to offer, Sure windows 7 is faster and more reliable, but without any new “Attraction” features, How many people who just bought vista are going to be happy to Pay for a fix for it. I’m sure microsoft has thought about this, and if anything learned a thing or two over the years. but hey you get back up, dust yourself off and keep moving forward. With that being said, I truly believe that microsoft will have a few surprises up their sleeves

My views have changed since I posted this article. I thought PT was credible and still can, but at this stage of the game, a new UI is just unrealistic

  7. IT News blog says:

I so would love to see an amazing mind blowing UI. I love beautiful eye-candy-ish interfaces

  8. Claus says:

That tells us that Microsoft is may be still up for some surprises.

  9. JT says:

I don’t care what interface it has
(Aero or otherwise ) as long as the minimum
specs ( support for DirectX 9 graphics, WDDM Driver, 128 MB of graphics memory (minimum, Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware and 32 bits per pixel) ) stay the same. One of the reasons Vista wasn’t popular was the
hardware upgrades it needed for the eye
candy. Hopefully, Microsoft will make it
useable for 70-80% of the hardware already
out there (businesses won’t want to upgrade
    too quickly.)

    • WinterWolf says:

But as time goes on, Operating systems will get smarter, More Stable and secure, And more Visualy Enhanced. You can’t expect the Operating System of the Say, the year 2050, to run on todays hardware, because the more you put into an operating system, and the better you want it to be, the better the hardware has to be. People expect so much out of an OS that for one, is just not capible of everything, or two, being perfect. And when new OS is at it’s best, people do not want to pay the price on the hardware it takes for it to run it’s best. In my opinion, There is not, and will never be a perfect Operating system, because there is always something to improve, there is always ideas that are created *From* ideas. It can’t be stopped. It’s an infinate loop, And it’s human nature to always want to be better then we were before. The future is not now, it’s what we keep aiming for over and over again, untill we forget that todays success was a year ago’s vision, and 50 years ago Impossible.

      • Al says:

Well I think the reason why hardware upgrade is a bigger problem today than before is because the expectations back then were incredibly low and although may have been met, weren’t entirely satisfying.

With Windows XP running on pretty low hardware and still managing a pretty satisfying experience, people don’t want to upgrade. I also blame Microsoft for the lack of revolution in OS in Vista and 7.

  10. John says:

I liked whistler’s old UI better than luna. It was more practiacal and less in-your-face blue everywhere-ish.

  11. Frodo Baggins says:

What happened to those mock ups of what windows 7 could have looked like?

  12. anon says:

didn’t you guys try win7 beta?? what rumors?

    • John says:

You might want to look around the site a little more and come back and look at your comment.
You might start laughing as hard as I am right now (-:

    • Al says:

I don’t really understand what you’re trying to ask? Everyone who wanted to try the beta pretty much tried it by now. It came out a few months ago.
