Pirates from around the world are already taking advantage of the stability of Windows 7 Beta. Jerry Liao from CNet Asia stumbled upon a small shop in the Philippines selling what they claim to be Windows 7 Ultimate for only 70 pesos – the equivalent of $1.44 USD!

The lady at the shop claimed to be tech illiterate, but when asked whether the copy of Windows 7 was complete, she said yes.
Microsoft has been trying to solve its piracy problem with its Windows Genuine Advantage Program but it has often been the center of criticism. Since the fiasco on XP, Microsoft has toned down WGA in Windows 7 to ensure that the user receives notices many days in advance before the activation period expires. If a user does not activate on time, a notice will appear every 60 minutes to notify the user that activation is required. The background also turns blac

In my country a purated edition of Windows 7 is only for 5 RF.That means not even a dollar. They are not even selling in shops. They sell it in Roads.
wat country are you from? I guess its worth it since if they are selling it for that cheap, I imagine it wouldn’t be worth it in bandwidth or internet costs to download the 2.7gb iso
In Delhi, India Palika bazaar has win 7 ultimate for 20 rs-30 rs. NOT EVEN A DOLLAR!
if you guys can get some pics that would be awesome!
Windows 7 Beta is a free download from Microsoft. Why would anyone pay for it.
For one thing, its no longer “officially available,” And, of course, the beta, IIRC, was only open to first world customers. Besides, when would pirates NOT like to make a buck off something they paid nothing for?

I think you will find it has nothing to do with the alleged stability some users are getting (you have seen there are two opposing views on the Windows 7 beta?)
-
I think pirates would take advantage of any piece of software with a known brand name, its not as if they have to worry about honoring a returns policy nor, I suggest have any concerns about customer satisfaction.
-
Are we suggesting that pirates have a quality control process they put software through before they sell their wares illegally?
-
If Microsoft takes pride in Windows 7 being a viable $1 pirate product then I suggest things at Redmond are far more desperate than we thought. (not that I am suggesting they are)
-
Im sure the Microsoft investors wont be too happy that on top of a recession they now have Windows 7 sales being eaten away at before the RC has even hit the shelves.
-
Im sure you’ll find that Vista was being sold in exactly the same way when it was new on the scene, and these days (IMO) you’d be lucky to give it away. A pirated product is no sign of quality.

Bear in mind that Bill Gates & the founding partners at Microsoft could personally pay the salary of every Microsoft employee for life and still have plenty of cash left over. That just goes to show how much they overcharge for Windows. Your fair share of the cost of developing Windows is more like a couple of dollars, but most people have spent hundreds or thousands over the years. At least the price for the OLPC version is more realistic–but that’s no excuse to rip off everyone else:
“Microsoft … announced in May 2008 that Windows XP will be available for an additional cost of 10 dollars per [OLPC brand] laptop.”
If you paid the retail price for Windows just once, Microsoft has received more than fair compensation for the current edition–and for a lifetime of upgrades. But most PC vendors force you to buy it even when you don’t want it: You have to buy Windows if you want the computer. That’s called racketeering, and it’s a crime. Besides, Microsoft ought to be paying me for the incomprehensible amount of lost time, lost money and lost data that I have endured due to bugs in Windows. They always keep promising to fix what is wrong, but never deliver on those promises. Meanwhile, Mac OS & Linux keep improving by leaps & bounds in all of the measurements which really matter. But Windows is still plagued by instability, data loss, corrupted registry & user profiles, overbearing copy protection, non-portability, constantly degrading performance over time, the need for frequent reinstallations, massive security holes, huge performance loss due to the need for adequate malware protection, etc. etc. etc.
When are people going to learn that they are just being scammed? Microsoft always promises the next release will be more stable & reliable. If the truth is the opposite, do you really expect them to say so? How many times do we have to pay for a product which is defective in design & manufacture when we should be getting a refund instead? Millions of people have faced this situation:
The hard drive failed or Windows just got corrupted and it had to be reinstalled. But the manufacturer gave you no installation discs, so now you are forced to pay for Windows again… or else you use a “pirated” version. But are you really a pirate if you paid for Windows when you bought the computer? No, Microsoft is the pirate and the world’s biggest gang of hypocrites. I have spent far more time repairing Windows than I spend on getting work done… but maybe that is because I am a power user and I notice things are broken which the average user does not until it’s too late. I’m glad I converted my PC to Linux and I will never go back to Microsoft. I will never let a manufacturer force me to buy Windows again: if I can’t get the same machine without Windows for a lower price, I will just buy something else no matter how much I desire that piece of hardware. I simply refuse to be bullied by the computer mafia and I will not pay the Microsoft tax anymore. So come join the movement for freedom of choice and fair prices–we just don’t have to take this abuse! Windows is worth LESS than nothing to me… it is a liability.
YEAH!!!THE REVOLUTION!!!BURN IT DOWN MAN!! BURN IT ALL DOWN!!!
I would buy a copy – just for the case it came in. The case would be of more use than the product inside – bootleg or otherwise! just my opinion
Botnet meat, wtf they never heard of asianux or linux in general? Wtf you need windows crap for in these years, doing local virus zoo experiment for fun?
You have macs if you are homosexual or never want to know ins and outs of computer technology, but have lots of money. Otherwise arm gentoo or debian if yr lazy and put it in the corner. Its always up to date.
The problem is this in a nutshell Microsoft spends more time and energy trying to stop piracy than if they cut the price. They should take notes from the movie racket and why movies are released to DVD right after the finish in the theater no one wants to wait for things for a year to hit the stores or pay extreme amounts of money for it. Microsoft sells there O/S for 190.00 for Win7 Ultimate and that’s the OEM system builder copy not the retail which is almost $300.00 (are you kidding) then They have the nerve to wonder why it’s pirated. That’s more than the hardware some people are using. Well the joke is on Microsoft and their greed because the more they jack up the price of there O/S the more it will be pirated. Period.
As a reseller I see it all the time people order 25% or more of the boxes with no O/S (I know what O/S will be loaded) . It just costs to much. In fact the only windows boxes we run are the free licenses that Microsoft gives away to resellers all our other machines run Open Solaris. Maybe if they stopped ripping people off they would not have a serious piracy problem.
as a third nation here in the philippines, piracy is common and nothing can stop piracy especially if there are thousands of warez and p2p sites displaying microsoft windows OSes like windows 7…
were too poor (generally) to care about os and computer, so we buy food instead…..
