Pirated copies of Windows 7 will get Windows Updates

A surprising move by Microsoft will allow pirated copies of Windows 7 to continue to receive Windows Updates, including security patches and Service Packs. Previous copies of Windows required the user to verify they were running a genuine version of Windows before receiving such updates. Director of Windows Client Enterprise Security Paul Cooke gave the following statement to Maximum PC:

Keeping a machine up to date is one of the first steps in helping ensure that they remain reliable, compatible, and safe from threats when they are online. Some of the most famous incidents of malicious software infection have come after security updates were publicly available from Microsoft – Blaster, Zotob, Conficker and Sasser, just to name a few. Rest assured that we at Microsoft are committed to making sure that security updates are available to all of our users to help ensure a safe online experience for everyone.

This doesn’t mean Microsoft will be treating pirated versions of Windows the same as genuine versions. Pirated versions of Windows are not expected to be eligible for Microsoft “goodies.”

With the possible revision of WGA, “free” Windows 7 for a year download with the Release Candidate, and now this, has Microsoft finally changed its stance on piracy? Let us know in the comments.

I bet in the copyright (which people never read when setting up new program) it will say “there’s a geographic tracking program in Win7″ and bam! next thing you know you’ll be sent with a fine from Microsoft or be sued.

I used to think that if you pirated software, MS would be able to do that somehow (well it’s possible with your IP address) but then I realized no multi-billion dollar company will chase after a single person for stealing a few hundred dollars from them

That remembers me on a game publisher, EA games. There were huge problems with DRM, so that even customers, who bought the game in a store legally, had problems playing the games with this strange DRM. The biggest problem was, that people, wo downloaded the game illegally, had not a single problem using a crack. Of course, the legal customers were really angry about it, and so EA games stopped publishing their games with DRM, and that saves EA Games a huge amount of money and legal customers a huge amount of nerves. Maybe Microsoft had the same problems, that some legal customers had some problems with the Genuine, but illegal customers were able to bypass the Genuine with no problems.

Right now, I’m mad at Far Cry 2 for doing the same thing and wished I pirated it. I’ve been installing Far Cry 2 for about 6 times now because I’ve been benchmarking and reinstalling Windows. Now I can’t even play it because it says I’ve activated it too many times.

I even bought it from Steam, and I could have easily pirated it seeing that I wasn’t even going to bother playing the game. You’re right, any company who does DRM, get it right, or don’t do it.

Their taking away WGA? I kindof liked gettting the satisfaction of knowing I legally bought my copy, so I get “privlages”, but now it’s equal.

    • Al says:

No they’re not taking it away. The link I gave in my post talks about some of the consequences you’ll have for now having a legal copy, but it’s only regarding the Beta. I think there will be some changes seen in the RTM but not many. One example of this is the black desktop. Someone I knew who was running a counterfeit copy hated the black desktop so much that he actually bought a copy of XP.

Microsoft also said there are certain “goodies” that pirates won’t be used.

    u all r wrong…….
actually microsoft is playin dirty politics here
we all knw vista ws not rejected by everyone,it ws big discrace..
it did’nt satisfied the expectations of people and moreover the red hat enterprise destroyed the position of microsoft…..
microsoft wants to attain that position again and eant to destroy the linux too…….
by leaking it’s torrents everyone will start using the windows instead of linux and fibal will get his old reputation again….

I downloaded several “leaked” copies of Windows 7 from torrents and I’m glad I did since the Microsoft Download Manager failed when I tried to obtain the genuine RC. I do not consider this “pirating” because the product is not yet for sale, but I am very pleased with it and will get the upgrade from Vista as soon as it is ready. I think they should provide it as a service pack for Vista.

  11. For the past nine days we are snowed in. This has not been really very much fun as all seven kids happen to be trapped inside house with me for the fantastic deal of the time. It has been too cold for them to stay out for any length of time. To add to that, our electric keeps planning in and out. Whenever we do have electricity we charge the laptop battery. When the electricity goes out, we either play games, read or Free PS3 Games thanks to our generator. I’m glad we discovered the website where we can do this as it keeps everyone occupied and quiet. I imagine I miss the quiet most of all.
