More Windows 7 RC details revealed

Just a day after Paul Thurott revealed Windows XP Mode for Windows 7, he comes back with additional details where he’s pretty sure “most of this is all new info.” Here are the details:

AAC/H.264/MPEG-2 support will not be provided to Windows 7 Home Basic and Starter customers. That functionality will only go out to Home Premium, Professional, and Enterprise/Ultimate users. But it looks like there will be add-ons made available (free or paid, it’s not clear) to users of low-end Windows 7 versions.

Maximum RAM. All 32-bit versions of Windows 7 “support” 4 GB of RAM, of course. But if you go 64-bit, you can add up to 8 GB in Home Basic and Starter, 16 GB in Home Premium, and 192 GB in Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate.

Windows Media Player Remote Media Experience (RME) is not available in Windows 7 Home Basic or Starter. However, all versions can share media over a home network.

All Windows 7 SKUs support 20 simultaneous SMB connections. This works out to 10 users, apparently.

XP Mode (formerly Virtual PC). As we first revealed yesterday, only Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate are licensed to install XP Mode.

There aren’t any surprises here but the details are good to know. Do you think the limitations are a good move by Microsoft? Let us know in the comments.

    192 GB in Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate

    I cant even imagine that much RAM lol :P

    you could probably run every app in the world all at once!

      @Alex:
      That’s also what Bill Gates said when he came up with the 640KB RAM limit some time ago …

    • Dude says:

      And it still won’t be able to run Crysis.

      • WinterWolf says:

        192 gb? That just dosen’t seem right? Just like Alex said I couldn’t imagine that much ram in a pc at the moment. Even if it was possible, (and i dont know where you would get that much ram in sticks, i dont think they make them that high), What would you DO with all that ram. you would never have a slow computer again.

      • Al says:

        I believe the RAM amount is more of a show-off thing that Windows “can do this” rather than seeing someone actually put 192GB of RAM in this generation of OSes

  2. Alex says:

    Imagine The Performance You Could Get With That!!!

    LOL:P

  3. Helton says:

    192 GB is virtually supported by 64-bit platforms, which not exactly means it’ll manage it all. But it’d be cool not to have “low virtual memory” issues :P

    @Primedeath:

    First of all, you’re obviously missing some sense of humor … and then you should be careful when you want to teach others on topics you don’t know yourself. It’s absolutely not clear if Bill Gates ever said this 640KB line, yes … so, your statement “he never said that” might be likely as wrong as my own statement (which was not a dead serious comment anyway …). So, in short words: take it easy …

  5. Mike says:

    Can’t wait for W7 – I’m on my 4th version of the Beta and love it… the sooner they release it the sooner I can get Vista out of my life forever and ever and ever and ever.

    In terms of what features are in each version,
    I do hope they don’t screw up with Remote Desktop like they did in Vista by not allowing all versions to use it by default – I’ve gone crazy constantly updating my termsrv.dll with a hacked one on Vista home Premium just so I can use Remote Desktop!
