There was a lot of doubt as to whether Microsoft will create a separate version of Windows 7 for light-weight ULPC laptops or netbooks. Cnet managed to receive confirmation that this will actually be the case:
A Microsoft person on the floor said that a lite version of Windows 7 will run on 1GB of memory and 16GB of (solid-state drive) storage. Higher-end Netbooks will have a 160GB hard disk drive, according to Microsoft “guidance.”
The person on the floor also said that dual-atom processors will be seen in netbooks in the very near future. As mentioned in one of our previous articles, the netbook market is one area of the playing field Microsoft has been weak at. With more than 5 million Atom processors shipped during Q3 2008, it is quite clear that Microsoft has no time to waste in making sure Windows 7 will suit the netbook market as well.
