Microsoft rumored to remove the three-app limit from Windows 7 Starter

If Paul Thurott’s recent newsbreak holds true, then future netbook buyers will be happy to know that they will no longer be tortured with the three-app limit that exists on copies of Windows 7 Starter.

Like with Vista, much of the FUD around Windows 7 Starter’s three-app limit was originally based off opinion rather than fact. Some bloggers such as Ed Bott dove right into Windows 7 Starter and found the application limit to be much more feasible than it sounded.

Microsoft is taking a big step forward by making sure that it is not confusing to use Windows 7 whether it is Starter or non-Starter. Without the three-app limit, it will be interesting to see how else Microsoft plans to encourage users to upgrade.

It’s really great. It will surely make windows even more popular and will drop down use of pirated windows

This isn’t news, XP Starter and Vista starter were both limited to low resolutions, and 3 open applications (each of which can open, I believe, 3 windows) at a time. Further, the Starter editions are a (feeble) attempt to slow down piracy in developing countries, where most people aren’t going to pay full price (or any money, really) for a normal copy of Windows. Starter has *not* been sold in any of the major markets (US, Western Europe, Japan).

I just purchased an Acer Aspire One which comes with the Windows 7 “Starter” edition. I am very disappointed with the limitations of this so called OS. It should be called the “Stopper” edition. I have worked with PCs since the original IBM PC, and find this a new low for Microsoft.

In particular, I find it petty that Microsoft has removed the ability to change the wallpaper from Windows 7.

I will either return this PC, or will look for an open source OS for it, such as, Ubuntu.
