In the past, Microsoft has been keen on encouraging enterprises to upgrade to Windows Vista before deploying Windows 7. With the release of Windows 7, Microsoft executive Bill Veghte urged companies to dump Vista deployment altogether and shift to Windows 7.
If you’re just starting your testing of Vista, with the [Windows 7] Release Candidate and the quality of that offering, I would switch over and do your testing on the Release Candidate, and use that going forward.
According to ComputerWorld, Veghte’s advice did not shock the analysts from Gartner. Gartner was the same research group that suggested it is no longer necessary for organizations to wait until SP1 before deployment. Michael Silver, an analyst for Gartner, advises those in the middle of deploying Vista to continue if they are doing so only on new machines as they are being bought. He also added that if dumping Vista would delay deployments by 6 months or less, it would be a wise movie to do so.
Microsoft recently announced that the RTM is expected to be finished in three months, and that they are well on track for a holiday season release. Paul Thurott also recently said he had received a tip that Windows 7 will be released on October 15th according to the current schedule.
