Localized editions of Windows 7 RC to be released for testing

Microsoft is rumored to issue localized editions of Windows 7 RC to a select few for testing and assessment of the language translation. Russian news website TheVista.Ru was a select number of invitees who received a letter about the “Mini-Beta” program, with preliminary steps on how to participate in the testing. The Russian localized edition of Windows 7 will be distributed through Microsoft Connect. Beta testers are expected to evaluate and make suggestions on the translation of the OS during the two-month beta period. The “most successful” testers will receive prizes which include a boxed copy of Russian Windows 7 Ultimate.

Microsoft has yet to announce any details on the Mini-Beta program to the public. It is also interesting to note that based on the release candidate download page Microsoft accidentally put up on Technet, there was no mention of a download for Windows 7 RC in Russian. This may suggest that different beta testing programs will be in effect for different localizations.

Andreas Stenhall, Microsoft certified technology specialist, confirmed that a limited number of people would test drive the Swedish language flavor of Windows 7. “I’ve had the chance to offer around 70 slots to users for participating in the beta testing of the localized Windows 7 in Swedish. The interest in this opportunity was amazing and all the slots got filled up really fast. Now, we are all eager for the beta test to actually start,” Stenhall stated.
