Microsoft seems to be running some sort of promotion that allows users a free one year subscription to the Technet Plus service. Technet Plus subscriptions are aimed at IT professionals and allow you access to full-version Microsoft software (including operating systems, SDKs, language packs, and more), beta software, professional support incidents, online concierge service, and an abundance of resources for evaluating and deploying Microsoft software. Windows 7 Milestone builds such as the Beta and Release Candidate were always offered via Technet a couple of days in advance to the public release date.
The subscription normally goes for $399 USD but you can get a free subscription for a year right now. Use the following links corresponding to your localization:
Canada Link
US Link
UK Link
Once you’ve clicked one of the links, click the Buy button. You will then be prompted to sign in if you haven’t already. Log in with any account associate with the Windows Live network such as your hotmail, Windows Live, or existing Technet account credentials. Once you’ve done so, fill in your name, address, email, and phone-number, and click on Continue, then the Place Order button. Once you’re at the Order Receipt page, you’re not finished yet. Scroll down and follow the three steps as stated:
1. Sign In: Visit the TechNet Subscriptions Benefits Portal (you may be prompted to re-sign in using your Windows Live ID).
2. Register: You will be required to enter your first name, last name, e-mail address (exactly as they appear in your “Ship to” information) and Benefit Access Number: 1203325099 and accept the license terms.
3. Access Benefits: Once you have completed the registration, you will be able to access your online benefits, including Subscriber Downloads from the TechNet Subscriptions Management page. Each time you visit you will sign in using your Windows Live ID.
That’s it! This took me a couple of minutes and I was set up in no time. Enjoy your one-year Technet Plus subscriptions.
Update: ArsTechnica is reporting that the subscription will last until September 30, 2009 instead of the one year as originally thought. Though you should still not pass up on this rare opportunity.
Update 2: The key system does not seem to be responding. This is perhaps caused by a server overload.
Update 3: The key system is back in place but users are getting a 404 error once they attempt to use one of the signup links. This may be due to a server overload. Keep visiting this page for updates!
Update 4: Looks like it was a big error on Microsoft’s part. All the free subscriptions have been revoked and signups are not available.

Update from Arstechnica:
I am now hearing that this is part of a pilot program that is set to expire on September 30, 2009, which means it’s more of a three month deal, but hey, free is free! Currently, the expiration date reads “1/1/1900″ but Microsoft is working on fixing that.
Will it be possible to redeem it in another language? French, German or Spanish?
I haven’t used Technet before, Can i download Software in other languages than English?
Thanks in advance.
Yes, it is possible, just click on the right side of the title Downloads on languages. I have just downloaded a dutch version op XP
I’m registered….!! FREE!!
its not working with me
I’m from Norway.
Google Maps =)
It would be cool if some other countries could apply too, even without getting the software, just downloading.
Google Maps

“We are unable to validate your customer information and proceed with your order at this time.”

Try again. The keys system seems to be up right now
Is there any links for australia?
I’m very much interested in this pilot subscription.
Beware, as you will be hooked
They run these three or four month free subscriptions often, and once I had my three month run I couldn’t think of losing all those benefits. So now, I am a paid subscriber. In other words: this program does its job
Seems like I will be paying after this…
I Do Not No What Is Going On With Me It Will Not Let Me Reg On The Site Dose Any One No What Is A Matter With It
Sept 30th is not quite Oct 22nd, iow no free Windows Se7en:-( Likely there is no un-expiring software in that time window? A good way for MicroSoft to get testing done though;-)
How long takes submitting order? My takes about 2-3 minutes and shows error.
Guiless: The Oct 22 date for Windows 7 is for box sales on retail shelves. The RTM date for Windows 7 is late July, and usually MSDN and Technet have the RTM version on their site within a few days of that. So you should be able to get Windows 7 RTM before the September expiration.
However, the terms and conditions will not allow you to legitimitely run any of these OS from Technet download for a production machine. These licenses are for testing and development only, not for day-to-day use.
Pages are 404 now… so much for that idea.

To everyone complaining it didn’t work earlier, it works now. Key system seems to be working fine so the load must have been balanced. Give it another try
