After countless rumor posts and many download leaks around the web, Steve Ballmer announced at CES today that Windows 7 Beta will be publicly available for download on January 9th.
Windows 7 Beta is already available for download to MSDN and Technet subscribers, and via Microsoft Connect for anybody enrolled in the Windows 7 Beta program. Everybody else should watch the Windows 7 Page for the download link to be posted on January 9th at 12PM PST / 3PM EST.
According to the Windows 7 Team Blog, only 2.5 million downloads for the beta will be issued for a limited time. It will be available in 32-bit and 64-bit edition and available for download as an .ISO file. Most DVD burning software can burn the ISO image onto a DVD, but if you don’t have those ImgBurn is a good alternative. You can also just mount the ISO using PowerISO so you can install Windows 7 Beta without even burning a single DVD. Another alternative is to run it as a virtual machine. You can find more info about how to do that here.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the Windows 7 Beta can only be upgraded from Windows Vista SP1. Make sure you have Service Pack 1 installed. You can take a look at this article if you are having problems installing SP1.
Windows 7 Beta will expire on August 1, 2009. Many enthusiasts including Ed Bott have suggested that this could very well mean a possible Windows 7 release date before then. Only time will tell.
Can’t wait until tomorrow? Take a look at some Windows 7 Beta Screenshots.

Thanks for the info! I can’t wait to download it and try all these cool features and I hope some changes…
I have just installed the “leak version” build 7000 and IT’S GREAT. However, It keeps says ” Disk structure is corrupted ..” while Windows Xp in another partition skill works well. Has anyone had this, help me.
when do you get this error? how does it affect the way the OS work?
I’ve got the same problem, I can’t install any programs or activate the beta because I keep getting the disk corrupted message. So far, I haven’t found any solutions.
@Xnguyen, I’ve got this problem too. I was installing some application and I suddenly got this message. Since then I haven’t been able to install any other program or write anything on disk. Does anyone know what the hell makes this happen ?
@Xnguyen,
Also got the same problem with x64 windows 7 won’t let me install drivers or programs now…
@Sidey, what exactly is the error? does it show an error message?
@Brian,
It shows error messages saying ‘Disk structure is corrupted’. It first happened when I tried to extract a network driver on the desktop, The zip only partly extracted I got the inf but not the .sys or .dll file. I’m not sure if this is some sort of protection but I couldn’t extract this file to any folder on windows 7. I switched to vista x64 and extracted it and went back to windows 7 and it installed.
Other programs cause the same error as well if they install to the root folder like fraps, I get the error but the program works, Windows 7 works I can play games it runs without crashing but I get these error messages still and problems installing software. I’m pretty sure its to do with file access permissions.
Souds good, the Microsoft web server seems to be a little slow at the moment which would suggest several thousand people refreshing the same page every few minutes or so. Hope I get through! Can’t be arsing around with torrents when you canget a legitimate unmodified version for free to play with!
I downloaded the files can’t get a key microsoft should have known a few people might want the beta. I really hope nobody is going home at MSFT tonight till they get it fixed. I have to say Windows Seven now has its first strike against it. Two more till we know we have a dog.
