Ed Bott whipped out two great posts on Windows 7 that I think beta testers should take a look at.
The first one is called Five things every Windows beta tester should know and provides answers to a lot of misconceptions that have been floating around out there on how Microsoft views feedback and the progress made between each build.
His second article directly addresses some of Paul Thurott’s comments and discusses how Microsoft handles feedback before the design and beta process.
Once upon a time, it might have made sense to get design feedback from a widely released beta. That is not true today. If you’re building an entire operating system just to get feedback on its design, you’re setting yourself up for failure. The Windows 7 design was largely set before the beta code was released and that design incorporated a lot of feedback.
