Confirmed: Windows 7 Starter will not have three-app limitation

Last week, Paul Thurott had told us that Windows 7 Starter Edition will no longer come with a three-app limitation. Many did not believe this, but the good news is that Microsoft has announced today that this limitation will indeed be taken out after receiving much negative feedback from its partners and customers.

However, Windows 7 Starter will still only contain a subset of the features offered in higher editions of Windows 7. The following features will not be found in Starter:

  • Aero Glass, meaning you can only use the “Windows Basic” or other opaque themes. It also means you do not get Taskbar Previews or Aero Peek.
  • Personalization features for changing desktop backgrounds, window colors, or sound schemes.
  • The ability to switch between users without having to log off.
  • Multi-monitor support.
  • DVD playback.
  • Windows Media Center for watching recorded TV or other media.
  • Remote Media Streaming for streaming your music, videos, and recorded TV from your home computer.
  • Domain support for business customers.
  • XP Mode for those that want the ability to run older Windows XP programs on Windows 7.

As mentioned before, Windows 7 Starter does have maximum hardware specs, meaning any machine with specs higher than the maximum specs will not be able to run Starter.

Now the real question is, what does Microsoft plan to do to lure customers into upgrading away from Starter?
