Thread: Superfetch Opinions

    Superfetch Opinions

Ok, my system specs are 4GB of RAM and a 7200 RPM HDD. I was wondering if Superfetch would still be needed or if it'll just simply get in the way?

For those of you that don't know, Superfetch is the feature in Windows that predicts what applications you will load after booting up and preloads them or at least parts of those applications into your RAM. However, sometimes it preloads wrong or preloads too much, so I was wondering, should I disable Superfetch as in leave it on for Boot files but shut it off for applications, especially since my system can handle the extra workload on a cold boot now?

It's also worthy to note that Windows 7 superfetch is on a delayed start meaning it only starts preloading applications after 5 minutes.

Hey, I had it disabled for a week, but after trying I started having a long boot for each app I use...mostly Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat....they open faster when superfetch is enabled, and also regular things like firefox, yahoo messenger or msn messenger...I think it is just better to have it enabled.

I also have 4GB RAM, HD is only 5400 RPM though....

I've heard mixed reviews. I've heard that on slower hard drives Superfetch works well but on faster hard drives, it doesn't have as much effect. I've also heard the opposite that faster hard drives make Superfetch performance better.

What leaves me scratching my head is why it would matter if it's delayed 5 minutes when I have Firefox loading right after I log in?

Also I noticed you said "longer boot times" but I think you mean "longer start up times" since I don't think this should affect the actual boot sequence. I could be wrong though. But keep in mind that there's a way to disable superfetch for apps and leave it on for boot files.

I also have 4GB Ram and 500GB WD 7200RPM Sata II, and I tried my system with the Superfetch ON and OFF and decided for myself OFF is better because it loads the wrong applications into memory and when I really want to use the memory to load some other apps/progs this superfetch is taking it for nothing, also after a cold boot my applications start up right away with just a click so I personally dont see a use for this superfetch, although for some other people that always opens the same applications will help.

You don't have fast hard drive. Fast hard drives are 10000 RPM raptors or even better a Solid State Drive.

If you want programs you frequently use to load up faster then you need Super Fetch.

Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 here, and checking services very obviously tells me that Superfetch is NOT by default set to delayed start. This is the RTM version, are you by any chance running an earlier version? I´ve not touched this service at all, and on my box it clearly says Automatic on startup type, not Automatic (Delayed start).

Microsoft has mentioned that in order to make windows 7 start faster they set several system services to start with a small delay.

SuperFetch also starts much later, so the hard drive is not tied up immediately after the launch of the operating system. That means you don’t have to wait while the operating system monopolizes system resources for its caching tasks.
Benchmarks: Windows 7 RTM versus Vista, XP | Vista Home

What could be happening is that SuperFetch starts as usual but the actual service might be set up to wait untill there is a lull in disk IO activity and only then start copying program data into RAM.

    windows 7 is the one

Friends, I have been a great admirer of windows 98. I used it till 2004. But I started admiring windows xp after the release of service pack 2. Since then I used it until last month.

Last year I bought Windows Vista Business 64 bit. For 18 months hardly any notebook I bought be it Acer, Lenovo, Asus or HP, none of them were stable on Vista.

I kept using Windows XP. 2 weeks ago I bought notebook MSI EX 300. First I installed XP, I was not satisfied. Then I tried Vista Business 64 bit on it. It worked like a charm. I coulnt believe as this was the first notebook which fully and nicely ran on Vista Business 64 bit. WOW.

Yesterday I gathered my will and bought Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit. I just wanted to give it a try as I loved using Vista Business. I did a clean Installation on MSI EX 300.

I can YELL to the world that this Windows 7 is the best Windows I ever used. It very well installed all the hardware and fully supported my MSI EX 300 system.

I am in love with Windows 7. Can you believe it has not even been 24 hours since I bought Windows 7. Windows media centre is adorable. Windows media player supported almost every media format like mp4, avi etc etc. Organising files and folders and accesing them is so fast, SNAP and its there waiting for you.

Windows 7 is a dream come true. Go for it.
